Let's twitter again

Last Tuesday I started to use 'Twitter'. As I brought my laptop to the conference and we had a free WiFi, we could also twitter during presentations. This resulted in lively discussions on the presentation and the subjects in general. For me it adds a lot to my learning, but I could also understand that if you are a presenter and your audience is 'twittering', it feels like they aren't paying attention to you story. We also discussed what to do with remarks that are ment to keep insite the organisation. Maybe you should make a remark at the beginning of your presentation, that you trust people to put their opinion on twitter and not the things a presenter says. Difficult dilemma.
For me, I think I'm addicted to this 'new' phenomenon. It is said it's used by geeks. Well maybe I'm a geek. I also read that most people that start with Twitter stop using it within a month. We'll see. One of the things I have to solve is how I can manage to 'follow' my tweeds, private blog, business blog, email and hyves in a more easy way.

Finding the right maturity model

My 'introduction' to Enterprise Architecture this week in London made a huge impression on me. Somehow almost all presenters at the conference managed to have too much to tell in too little time. As a consequence it took a lot of concentration to 'get the story'. Today was the second day of the conference and offered three parallel streams of presentations. I preferred the stream on EA in Government and the public sector. As a consequence we had a lot of presentations by dutch people. Some of the things I found interesting:
- try to have the business 'pull' in stead of the architects 'push'
- SOA at 3TU has performance problems
- there is not much experience on Enterprise Architecture in Higher Education in the Netherlands
- releases of functionality grouped to deliver maximum benefit for the minimum risk and price
- you don’t have to complete an entire EA framework to add value to a client
- a service = function and capability
- why EA? because we remember your future?
- when technological complexity meets social complexity there is never 1 solution
- architecture = a dialogue

Tomorrow I will go back home and try to figure out where to start within our organisation. I'm happy that I have met same 'partners in crime' on the matter of Architecture and hope that we will keep in touch in the near future.

Architects are Aliens

After the preconference by JISC, today the conference for architecture practitioners had it's kick off. It's the 22nd conference, what sounds like a long history on this subject. But the conference is held 4 times a year so that explaines it.
The first keynote was by Steve Kirby from SAP. He had the privilege to launch TOGAF 9 (the open group architecture framework) in Europe. He told us that a lot of TOGAF 9 is origanally from SAP EAF (enterprise architecture framework). Not all people on Twitter agreed on this.
Next to the SAP-selling-story we had a spotlight on Archimate. This was also a launch-presentation (of the modelling language Archimate).
The presentation on certification didn't attract my attention.
The final session of the morning was a panel discussion on 'Resisting Short term thinking'. It was an interesting discussion with a lot of viewpoints. To my opinion the following was interesting:
- in these economic times it's even more important for an architect to clearify to the business what is the added value of EA
- it's all about short term values, the 'big program' is dead
- architects should talk 'business', they have to know how descisions are made
- don't wait for the business to make to plans, but anticipate and help the business to define their plans
The afternoon I spend on the stream on business analysis.
The start by Ron Tolido sounded promising. He talked about trying to define a open methodoloy for business analysis.
I also liked the presentations by Nigel Green (author of'the book on communication 'Lost in Translation'). Nigel stated: there is no divide between IT and business, but only a communication problem. He introduced the VPEC-T model (values, policies, events, contenct, trust) with five ways of looking at a business information system.
Finally we had a workshop by Ann Rosenberg on Business process management. This was not what I expected. I guess the presenter had a lot of knowledge, but I didn't manage to get a grip on her story.

After the last workshop we went for the evening program on which I may come back later on.

And today was also my first day on Twitter, what a great invention. I will come back to Twitter as well (vanpopta, #ogadc)

Rabbit in the headlights?

Before the start of the conference (this afternoon) JISC and Surf organised a workshop on Enterprise Architecture (EA) in Higher Education (HE). The title of the workshop is 'doing EA. The dutch delegation participated in this workshop by giving two presentations as Case Studies in the morning. One from Richard Valkering on the road to EA at the University of Amsterdam and another by Pepe Wildeman on Governance and the role of the Architect. These contributions to the workshop, but also the presentations of three english cases, gave interesting insites in current practices of EA within HE.

Some of the interesting parts I found were:

- an organisation must be ready for EA, before they start. We also discussed a maturity model (simple version: explorer, adopter, implementer, achiever, practitioner)
- involving the business by starting with specific problems. Also called 'starting with a burning platform'. Also refered to as using the incremental approach, building up the big picture through individual projects.
- governance is about organising demand and supply
- take notice of the way we talk ('talk english). Avoid using 'architecture'-language
- If you don’t want to go anywhere, you don’t need a vehicle. And If you don’t know where you’re going, a vehicle won’t help (vehicle: governance and EA)
- we tend to respond as a ‘rabbit in headlights’ – we are not mature enough to make the right choices in these times of rapid changes

Later on this week I will come back on some of these points.

During the workshop the tweeds were 'flying around'. Maybe this will be the start for me to start twittering as well, who knows. I will keep you informed.

Fysiek minimum vs virtueel maximum
